The volume of data exchanged every moment wirelessly via radio frequencies is constantly increasing and it is clear that the associated speed and latency requirements are beyond current 5G technology.

In wireless data transmission, each bit of data is encoded on a carrier frequency. To achieve higher data rates, higher carrier frequencies must be used. In fact, with each new generation of wireless communication technology, the frequency range has shifted further towards higher frequency bands (see the figure below).

 

The two main hurdles for the development of an efficient 6G chip: energy consumption and signal quality

The standards for the next generation which is already referred to as '6G' have not yet been set and the technological limitations for higher data rates are manifold: moving to a higher frequency band poses serious problems in terms of signal quality, power consumption and production costs and makes this solution unaffordable with today's technology.

FirstTo6G is an ambitious European research project to develop the world’s first 6G transmitter and receiver (transceiver) microchip technology, that meets all the requirements to be widely adopted: extremely wide modulation bandwidth at high signal quality, high energy efficiency, and low cost.
